About the Herd Journal

Who tends the herd, how each bovine tale takes shape, and why it matters to the ranch.

Why we started this journal

Four ranchers, one shared logbook of oxen and hay

We kept trading the same notes after every morning among the grazing cattle and finally admitted it was a journal. The first issue went out to eleven neighbors across the grazingland.

How a story comes together

Herded first, written second

Every story starts in the pasture and is checked by someone who has stood beside a muscular bull. A claim that cannot survive a second look at the hoofs on the ground does not stay in.

How we work the land

Mooing Across the Meadow

01

Grazing the Pasture

Nothing gets described unless one of us has stood in the meadow in front of the bull.

02

Livestock at Ranch

The hard mornings tending livestock stay in. They are usually the most useful part.

03

Oxen Pulling Hay Carts

Mistakes get fixed on the page, with a note on what changed, right down to the Mooing at dawn.

Bovine Herds Grazing Across Pastures

One long read on the herd and one short field note from the ranch, sent the morning they go out.
